Gino Rea proved undefeatable on day 2 at Donington Park, dominating the field in treacherous conditions and securing his maiden Bennetts British Superbike victory.
The penultimate round of the 2021 championship kicked off in eventful fashion for himself and the Buildbase Suzuki team.
Rea sat comfortably in the top 3 following Friday’s Free Practice 1 session, before a high speed crash at Craner Curves in FP2 which sat him out of the remainder of the session.
Despite the crash, Rea came back strong for Saturday’s track action, securing his first ever pole position start in a qualifying session.
From lights out, he established his dominance over the field, making a rocket start and taking the lead into the first corner. Rea maintained the lead throughout the majority of the race, managing to pull a gap of over eight seconds as the race progressed.
Following his victory, Rea said, “I’m speechless after that result, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. It was an unexpected result for us, we’ve been chasing the podium over the last few rounds. We’ve had the pace, just not the luck.
“Full credit to the Buildbase Suzuki team for all of their hard work leading up to today. Hopefully that result has repaid them for their efforts. To be able to transform the pole position into a win is an incredible feeling.”
